Government Waste: 14 phantom Zip Codes receiving fed ’stimulus’ money…

As much as $9.5 million in federal stimulus dollars went to 14 zip codes in Virginia that don’t exist or are in other states, Old Dominion Watchdog (http://virginia.watchdog.org) reports. The fake zip codes were listed on Recovery.gov, the federal Web site that is supposed to track how the stimulus money is being used.

The phony zip codes are a new wrinkle in Recovery.gov’s increasingly tattered credibility. In November, Ed Pound, director of communications for the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, said a rash of phantom congressional districts found on the website were the result of confusion by fund recipients, who apparently didn’t know who their congressman was.

Despite four years, millions of dollars in planning and a last-ditch pitch from President Obama, the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid ultimately fell short.

The City of Chicago was eliminated in the first round of voting, before any host city was selected.

An expert called it the “biggest shock in IOC history.”

Supporters gathered in Chicago were equally shocked. Many left the rally in tears.

Tokyo was also eliminated in the first round.

WASHINGTON – An innovative new campaign to alert Congress of widespread grass-roots opposition to massive new spending plans as well as other objectionable and intrusive legislation is already responsible – in the first 24 hours – for the distribution of 500,000 “pink slip” notices to members of the House and Senate.

WND announced the “Send Congress a Pink Slip” campaign yesterday and it has already reached one-tenth of its stated goal of 5 million notices, individually addressed, personalized with senders name and address and delivered to all members of Congress by Fed Ex. Already, half a million of the “pink slips” are on their way to Washington.

“This looks like a historic effort – comparable to the massive march in Washington, the tea party rallies and the town hall actions,” said Joseph Farah, editor and chief executive officer of WND. “I’m quite sure nothing like this has ever before been undertaken.”

The idea was conceived by Janet Porter of Faith2Action and a WND weekly columnist.

“We set a goal of 5 million pink slips to members of Congress,” she said. “We might even surpass that goal.”

Porter said the highest priority of members of Congress is re-election. The campaign is designed to put them on notice their hopes of staying in Washington are fading fast.

“There is a revolution brewing across this country,” she said. “People are angry about losing their country and they are ready for action. This campaign is just the latest evidence.”

The “Send Congress a Pink Slip” campaign ensures that a brief but poignant message will be delivered by Fed Ex to all 535 members of the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate – all for a remarkably low price based on economies of scale.

“We encourage citizens to take individual actions,” said Farah. “But when we act as a group, it’s more cost-effective and the results more dramatic. Just try Fed Exing members of Congress yourself and see what it costs. We have learned from past experience that Fed Ex actually ensures delivery to members. What they do with them at that point is their choice.”

The program is based on several other successful programs of the past, including one last summer that delivered 705,000 letters to senators protesting a “hate crimes” bill dubbed by critics as “the Pedophile Protection Act.”

“I believe this has the potential to be the most successful grass-roots effort in history,” said Porter. “After all the town halls and tea parties and the massive demonstration in Washington, Congress still hasn’t gotten the message. Now it’s time to show them just how serious we are with a message aimed at what they most care about – getting re-elected.”

The “pink slip” officials are getting is a warning that they work for the taxpayers. It lists four key issues that are deemed unacceptable to participants.

The program permits participants to Fed Ex 535 individually addressed messages to members of Congress, each one with the name and address of the sender for a total price of $29.95.

“This is a program that only works with massive numbers of participants that bring paper and printing and shipping costs way down,” explains Farah, editor and chief executive officer of WND, which has conducted similar programs in the past – this one being the largest and most ambitious.

California Joblessness Reaches 70-Year High (Welcome to Obama Nation)

California’s unemployment rate in August hit its highest point in nearly 70 years, starkly underscoring how the nation’s incipient economic recovery continues to elude millions of Americans looking for work.

While job losses continue to fall, the state’s new unemployment rate — 12.2 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics — is far above the national average of 9.7 percent and places California, the nation’s most-populous state, fourth behind Michigan, Nevada and Rhode Island. Statistics kept by the state show California’s unemployment rate was 14.7 percent in 1940, said Kevin Callori, a spokesman for the California Employment Development Department.While California has convulsed under the same blows as the rest of the country over the last two years, its exposure to both the foreclosure crisis and the slowdown in construction — an industry that has fueled growth in much of the state over the last decade — has been outsized.

Victory for America Tax Payers:Senate votes to block ACORN housing funds

The Senate voted Monday to block the Department of Housing and Urban Development from giving grants to ACORN, a community organization under fire most recently after workers in Baltimore were videotaped giving advice on evading tax laws to a couple posing as a pimp and prostitute.

The 83-7 vote would deny housing and community grant funding to ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin voted for the measure; Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski was not present for the voting. Both are Democrats.

Before the videotaping incidents, ACORN had been under fire for voter registration irregularities during the 2008 presidential campaign, but recent disclosures about the type of advice handed out by the group’s workers has further angered lawmakers.

Obama takes on Glenn Beck and ‘tea party’ critics over healthcare

The raging debate over healthcare continued Saturday with the two major political antagonists trumpeting their arguments for and against changes in policy that could impact every American.

That would be President Obama and — no, not Congressman Joe “You Lie!” Wilson — conservative broadcast dynamo Glenn Beck.

On his Saturday morning radio and YouTube broadcast, Obama spoke of “an anxiety that’s keeping more and more Americans awake at night.”

“Over the last twelve months, nearly six million more Americans lost their health coverage — that’s 17,000 men and women every single day. We’re not just talking about Americans in poverty, either — we’re talking about middle-class Americans. In other words, it can happen to anyone … I refuse to allow that future to happen. In the United States of America, no one should have to worry that they’ll go without health insurance — not for one year, not for one month, not for one day. And once I sign my health reform plan into law — they won’t.”

Then the President boarded Air Force One for a quick trip to Minneapolis for a rally on health insurance reform.

Meanwhile, back in Washington Beck was broadcasting live on the Fox News Channel as part of something he’s dubbed “The 9-12 Project.” The occasion was a “tea party” march and rally organized by “FreedomWorks” to protest the “irresponsible government takeover of our nation’s healthcare, devastating new energy taxes, and trillions of dollars in red ink.”

With a political arms race in full force, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) has raised almost $750,000 in less than 48 hours since his shout of “You lie!” to President Obama during the Wednesday address to Congress, almost matching the Internet-fueled haul of his likely Democratic opponent.A senior GOP official said Wilson, who apologized to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel after the health-care speech but has since refused a more public apology, has turned his own previous sleepy campaign machine into an Web-friendly effort. Just as liberals have poured cash into the campaign of Rob Miller, who lost to Wilson by almost eight percentage points in 2008, conservatives are pouring contributions into Wilson’s campaign at an astonishing rate.

Miller, a former Iraq war veteran, has raised more than $1 million for his 2010 rematch with Wilson, according to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Republicans expect Wilson to also top more than $1 million by Monday because of the immense publicity he’s received in the last 48 hours. In the relatively inexpensive South Carolina district, which takes in the southern portion of the state, the two opponents will likely have their two-year budgets filled in less than a week, strategists say.
